The Goods Shed Dismantlement and Relocation
To enable preparatory works for the Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium, the Hobart Railway Goods Shed (the Goods Shed) will be permanently relocated offsite while site works, remediation, and stadium construction are carried out.
Hobart’s Goods Shed is one of the best remaining examples of a large goods shed in Australia and has been identified significant because it is important to Tasmania’s history and it demonstrates rare, uncommon, or endangered, aspects of Tasmania’s heritage. It has been included on the Tasmanian Heritage Register and is listed as a Place of Cultural Heritage Significance on the Sullivans Cove Planning Scheme.
During construction of the stadium, the Goods Shed will be re-established to the north of the stadium precinct and repurposed as a food and beverage facility, whilst integrating the building as a useable section of the stadium and its footprint. It will support event-day hospitality and also be available for functions throughout the week. By integrating the stadium and the Goods Shed, a new public-facing role will be created for the historic building, encouraging engagement from a broader range of visitors.
Constructed in 1914–1915 as part of a redevelopment of the Macquarie Point railyard, the Hobart Railway Goods Shed was designed to facilitate the transfer of goods. It was built on timber piles and clad in corrugated iron, with a timber frame made from a combination of local Tasmanian timbers and imported Oregon pine.
In its new, permanent location, the Shed will be aligned with a former rail line near the site of the former Train Maintenance Shed. This placement will preserve the Shed’s historic connection to the rail yards and ensure it remains a meaningful part of the site’s evolving story.
The relocation of the Goods Shed is subject to enabling legislation.
Dismantling and reconstruction will be undertaken in accordance with the Conservation Management Plan (CMP) and Heritage Conservation Management Plan (HCMP) and will require endorsement from Heritage Tasmania prior to the commencement of works
